Back in July, our writer-in-residence, Lucille Rococoa worked with writer, poet, performance artist Hannah Jane Walker.  Hannah is currently immersed in
KHOR II, part of In Your Way – a new outdoor contemporary arts festival for Cambridge on September 8th & 9th.  Part of the festival is an exciting architecture project in the centre of Cambridge, and Hannah is looking for volunteers to get involved.  With one day of your time, you will help build a beautiful wooden pavilion on Christ’s Pieces. The building arrives flat packed and becomes a piece of art, a pavilion, as it is constructed by you. The day after the build, the pavilion becomes a public space for people to connect and talk about the future of Cambridge and concerns for the city.  This is the UK premiere of Dutch-Belgian collective ‘Theatre as Architecture Architecture As Theatre’ (TAAT)’s Do-It-Together installation.  Hannah is looking for enthusiastic and capable people who are passionate about Cambridge, who enjoy a challenge and meeting new people.

SIN Cru’s resident creative writer, Lucille Rococoa (Delinkuent/ Fly No Filter/ Swimming Horses) spent last week at Cambridge Junction on an artist development project for Makers at the beginning stages of writing a new show.  The week was expertly led by Hannah Jane Walker with guests Francesca Beard and Shon Dale Jones.  Miss Rococoa will be presenting some of her early explorations tonight as part of the Fen to Fringe preview festival, bringing the Edinburgh fringe to Cambridge, before it heads up the A1.

Lucille Rococoa and fellow Swimming Horses member, Naz Yeni will be sharing their beginning drafts and would be delighted to receive feedback.  They will be found during the interval, in the corner of the J2 foyer, next to the bar, standing behind a microphone.

Fly No Filter’s very special Lighting Designer, Trui Malten will also be presenting her new collaboration with Adie Mueller, My Heart My Heart throughout tonight’s event upstairs in The Hub.

If you’ve not made plans yet, have never ventured to the Edinburgh Festival, this is the year to do so.  Indeed if you’ve been organised and already booked your travel to the land of Irn-Bru, then you are already one step ahead.  This year, SIN Cru friends Menagerie will be at the Hall at St Johns from 3rd – 25th August with their flamboyant and Herculean solo performance, bloominauschwitz.  Winner of The Best New Play Award at Brighton Fringe, bloominauschwitz is an overwhelmingly powerful and playful investigation of belonging.

SIN Cru HQ has moved…  again.  We had a wonderful nine months with SCA in the centre of town and now the contractors are in to renovate the offices into student accommodation.  Allia Future Business has welcomed us to Cambridge Central, their hub for impact entrepreneurs.  We are delighted to be here and are already enjoying the waves of productivity.  London the crew Husky, and her various collection of chewed bones, is also settling in enthusiastically.

DanceEast are hosting a day for artist development this Friday 15th June.  They still have a few places left and are keen for local artists to benefit from the expertise on offer.

The day will consist of three sessions:

Session One | Creative Heart
10.00am – 2.00pm
The Ashton Studio provides a space for Creative Heart to come together to share practice and network. Participants will liaise directly with Hayley Matthews to book onto the session via the Creative Heart Facebook page.

Session Two | Kyla Booth Lucking
3.00 – 5.00pm
Kyla Booth Lucking is Arts Council Relationship Manager for Dance. Kyla will lead a group funding seminar, specifically for dance artists. Places are free, but are limited to 15 and need to booked via Box Office on 01473 295230.

After the group seminar, Kyla is offering three individual 20-minute chats: these are free but artists will need to book via Box Office on 01473 295230. These sessions are offered on a first come, first served basis and all three sessions have been snapped up.

Session Three | Danielle Teale

In 2017, Danielle Teale launched the AEP – an artist led skills exchange initiative for dance artists working in high quality, socially engaged choreographic practice, within and inspired by the community. The first AEP Skills Exchange drew on the collective skills and experience of the artists involved and gave space for dialogue and practical discovery on themes such as artistic integrity, people and communication, resilience and self-significance. This innovative, independently led programme, enabled artists voices to be heard, and allowed for a rich and meaningful professional journey to take place.

From June 1st until 4th August, Getty Images Gallery is hosting Beat Positive, a new exhibition bringing to life the dawn of hiphop culture.  The photography exhibition showcases iconic work from British photographers Janette Beckman and David Corio alongside never before seen material from the Michael Ochs, Right On! and Redferns archives.  Londoners Janette Beckman and David Corio first discovered hiphop in 1982 and their portraits of Run DMC, Slick Rick, Salt ‘n’ Pepa, Whodini, LL Cool J, and the Beastie Boys, along with many others, are considered classics of the genre.  Their work has been shown internationally at museums and galleries such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, The Museum of the City of New York and Powerhouse Gallery.  Beat Positive is a free exhibition, running Monday – Saturday at Getty Images Gallery, Oxford Street tube, London:  http://www.gettyimagesgallery.com/exhibitions/archive/beat-positive.aspx

Courtesy of the NHS, SIN Cru’s good friend Nick Ellis is celebrating his recovery from cancer with a gig tonight, at the Box Café in Norfolk Street, Cambridge.  Nick will be joined by the Sensationals, to perform great hits of the sixties and seventies.  The Sensationals have been a massive support to Nick throughout his illness, including the struggle through the associated stroke and its effects, so tonight is extra special.  The bar opens at 7.30pm and The Box Café will be taking donations on the door.

Insanity.  Jurassic 5’s founding member, Cut Chemist is back in London with an AV show to promote Die Cut, his first solo album since 2006, and he is joined by the formidable DJ Format and Edan.  UK artist DJ Format is no stranger to Jurassic 5, having worked with Akil and Chali 2na on We Know Something You Don’t Know, and both Cut Chemist and Format have collaborated with DJ Shadow.  Format also produced the Holy Shit mix with SIN Cru artist Mr Thing back in 2008.  Coming up from Maryland, Edan also has long ties with Cut Chemist and Format.  As a producer, DJ, MC, and Beatles/ Bob Dylan look-a-likey Edan is a creative force not to be slept on.
