StolenSpace Gallery is pleased to present ‘Harmony for the Righteous Destiny of Calamity’ a much anticipated new body of work by Dalek.

‘Harmony for the Righteous Destiny of Calamity’ is a fresh new body of work by American artist, Dalek. He returns to the UK for the first time since 2009, to showcase his exhibition of all new Space Monkey artwork.  Space Monkey was conceived in 1995, incorporating Dalek’s love of pop culture, the punk scene and cartoons.  Although Space Monkeys have become his trademark, they had been less prominent in his artwork since his 2001 apprenticeship with renowned Japanese artist Takashi Murakami.

The exhibition runs at StolenSpace from Friday 08.03.19 –  Sunday 31.03.19

If we ignore the weather and instead refer to our calendars/ diaries/ iPhones/ power filofax we will see that its time for Queens College Contemporary Dance Society‘s annual celebration of dance, Sprung!  And this year is a biggie; Sprung! celebrates 20 years.  We are very delighted to have been included in the programming for about 15 of those years, and this year is no exception.  SIN Cru Community featuring JNR Sinstar, Able-C will be performing Really.  a piece developed by eOTo artist, Sarah Snyders to the infectious, and apt Because I’m Me by Australian musicians, The Avalanches.

Independent dance artist and corporate facilitator, Adèle Thompson has been the showcase keystone throughout her artistic residency at Queens.  She has choreographed work to be presented at Sprung! by QdancE, and mentors students to run the dance society and curate the platform.  Adèle has a very special invitation for everyone,

we have loved you.  You have been our go-to supermarket for all company food shops, from conference hospitality, to youth projects, to artist tours.  We lived off your 50p flapjacks for the 18 months our studio was next to your Cambridge store.  As Artistic Director of SIN Cru, I am sharing my concern after hearing from our good friend and mentor, David Lambert.  David is a Cambridge based writer and lecturer and has started a petition for you, Aldi, to commit to Zero Plastic:

Why is this important?

“Aldi say they will continue to wrap their products in plastic for a ‘better check out experience’. But Aldi shoppers want a better life experience for the planet.  Aldi’s short sighted plastic policy adds to the trillions of kilos of plastic and micro plastics in our landfills and our seas. It filters down to our ground water, it gets into our fish, and we then eat it. Plastic netting from Aldi lemons and tangerine entangles and chokes seabirds. Plastic film on Aldi meat is absorbed into the chicken or salmon it comes into contact with.”

Dear Aldi, we celebrated your Supermarket of the Year award, and eagerly awaited the refurb of our local store, but are now very let down by your selfishness.  Unless you change your ways by joining the Zero Plastic programme, our relationship will come to an end.

We are back, hitting 2019 head on.  If you are anything like us, and launching forward with attack into the new year, then you need a brand-new-old-style Kangol Bermuda to provide protection against potential concussion.  Meet us at FullyDipped, the online store selling vintage hip hop clothing, fresh hip hop art work, and a wide range of cultural literature.  FullyDipped was founded as a cultural experiment by artists Ben Swift and Lucille Rococoa. The idea was generated by entrepreneur collaborator, Rolph Lauren who has a keen interest in vintage fashion and tutus. Together they sourced the beginnings of the stock with the core desire to represent the history of hip hop lifestyle. After some months of part-time trading, the store took a break to evaluate and prepare for its official FullyDipped launch… TODAY! Happy New Year.  Happy Year of the Pig.  Happy Thursday and welcome to the first blog of 2019.  We’ve been a bit late to the party getting our blog on, but you all know that a party never fully gets going until SIN Cru are in the house, so its all Oxo.  We’ve been busy in the lab creating and sweating and more creating, with members from Friday Foundation.  This new generation of bboys, Able-C, De Nice, Flex and Fresh Freddie Fresh, have been working their hardest, putting in hours of rehearsals with project leader Sarah Snyders (eOTo).  Sarah’s task was to design and deliver a performance project for Energise Youth Dance Showcase.  Energise has grown to become an annual event presenting work from Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire, featuring fantastic performers across all genres of dance.

What are your hopes and goals for this year?  At SIN Cru we are looking forward to more artist development, collaborations and new partnerships, and have started with our Energise project, as we mean to go on.  Sarah has received management support from Tom (eOTo), mentoring and choreography with AD Lucy, and a gift of studio space from CSVPA for the first week of intensive training with the group.  She has chosen the dope track Because I’m Me, by The Avalanches, and Tom has instigated a Twitter convo with the Australian group as part of his online marketing plan.  We are pledging to focus on the things that help us feel happy this year, launching with the Energise event which brings young people from dance schools all over Cambridgeshire together to celebrate their love of dance.  What does the year of the Pig mean for your plans?  It is a great year to make money, and invest in your dreams.  This year is going to be full of joy, friendships and love.  It is an auspicious year because the Pig attracts success in every sphere of life.

eOTo Tom asks, ‘what does the future hold for me?’  He continues, ‘a question that is constantly on my mind and maybe on yours too.  You want to know where your life is going, if the choices you make will have an impact on your future, how well off you’re going to be, and if you’ll die happy or alone.  These thoughts are always nagging in the back of my mind, which I could ignore when I was younger as I don’t think I had a care in the world, and was enjoying every moment.  Then with school systems implanting questions in your mind such as, what do you want to be when you’re older, I was excited by jobs I thought were cool and impressive.  I wanted to be a policeman, then a veterinarian at a zoo, and then a fire fighter.  As I got older I began to think of careers that matched my skillset, and that I would happy doing.  I am learning to worry less about what am I going to do, and who am I going to be, as searching for the answer can be stressful.  Right now, I want to be dancer and I am training and gaining experience in the field.  Don’t worry if you currently don’t know what you want to do in the future.  Nothing is fixed forever, and like Odd Future, you could be in a hip hop collective, you could be a TV star in a skit show, you could have a clothing line… you could retrain and return to your childhood dreams of crime busting, fire fighting, and elephant saving.  Enjoy what you are doing.’

The University of Bedfordshire has been commissioned by One Dance UK to undertake a study into the working lives of freelancers in the dance sector. The findings will be used to inform Arts Council England’s ten-year strategy regarding future sector support and advocacy provided by us and partner organisations.

With this in mind, Imogen Aujla, Senior Lecturer in Dance, and her colleagues have created a survey to be completed by those who work freelance in the dance sector – artists, teachers, producers, choreographers, healthcare providers, etc.
